Dear Detroit Residents,
It is a true honor to serve you as the Director and Health Officer for the City of Detroit Health Department!
Detroit is my home. My grandparents were one of the first African American families to move into their neighborhood in northeast Detroit, and I grew up riding my bike down those same streets where I felt protected and loved, as part of the community. I chose to become a physician because I wanted to improve the health of this community, and I am so excited to serve the city that made me who I am today.
I am devoted to building a strong health department for every Detroiter. As an emergency physician, I see the challenges people face when they can not access the care they need- an infant who does not live to see their first birthday, a child who has a vaccine preventable disease, or a woman who has a stroke because they can not afford their medications or get transportation to their medical appointments.
My commitment is to build solutions to these complex problems that are based in neighborhoods, developed with true community input, and bring together hospitals, residents, and community partners. We will do this with the utmost commitment to serving and protecting the City’s health.
I welcome your feedback as we strive towards a healthier Detroit!
