Small Business Spotlight: GS Group LLC

Denise Griffith and Monica Starks own and operate GS Group LLC, an environmental business conglomerate based in Detroit. Green Solutions Environmental Services, Myleadtraining.com (website down), and Star Construction & Development are all under GS Group LLC, focusing on a number of different environmental services including lead-abatement, air monitoring, and environmental training.

These two women have been in business since 2002 working in Detroit’s real estate market with a nonprofit company that focused on helping people who were renting homes, become homeowners. After the real estate market took a turn, Griffith and Starks got into construction and used their environmental work background to sustain their business.

Over the last 14 years of doing business in Detroit, Griffith says they have been able to “stay relevant” while evolving and strengthening their business. GS Group has had the opportunity to do business with the city over the years including asbestos testing for demolition projects and working with the city’s current zero percent interest home repair loan program.

“Back in March 2015, the city kicked off the zero interest home loan program and GS Group was awarded that contract”, Griffith tells us. “What was unique about that was we were one of the only firms in the city of Detroit and in the state of Michigan, that not only conducted environmental testing and did home repair work, but we also, on an as needed basis, performed home inspections for the city. So when they did the competitive bidding process, we were one of the few that had exhibited all of the elements.”

GS Group is heavily involved with Detroit’s small business community and hopes that it becomes an even stronger network. Griffith and Starks have participated in a number of D2D events and Starks will be speaking at their matchmaking event coming up on February 11.

“Our company went through the D2D program in 2013 and it was a great learning experience”, said Starks. “[The classes] were very helpful in terms of getting us to look at our business in a different way and we were able to grow our business after participating in that class.”

Starks says that a lot of the ground work that is in place with GS Group today came from her course with D2D. She also mentioned that she would like to see more networking events like that in the city.

D2D matches Detroit businesses with local suppliers to help local businesses support each other. D2D is hosting a matchmaking event on February 11, for Detroit-based businesses to interview with buyers from at least 10 of Detroit’s anchor institutions. The application deadline for businesses to apply is January 18. For more information about the matchmaking event and D2D, visit D2Dbusiness.org/.
