Small Business Spotlight: Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles

Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles has been a huge hit since it opened on Livernois last year. Owner Ron Bartell grew up near the area and saw that it was being underserved, so he wanted to build something that would bring people into the neighborhood. The name Kuzzo’s is a term of endearment and comes from a nickname Bartell and his cousins used growing up. Bartell says that the name speaks for itself and that everyone is welcome at Kuzzo’s to enjoy a good meal.

Bartell got the idea for serving chicken and waffles from traveling and eating at different restaurants. Kuzzo’s serves ten variations of chicken and waffles, and each dish has a name that is unique to Detroit.

“Chicken and waffles is a perfect dish that can be enjoyed by everyone. People from all different cultures and backgrounds can come together to enjoy this meal.”

Bartell is passionate about Detroit and about the revitalization of the neighborhoods. He hopes to expand Kuzzo’s into another neighborhood eventually.

“There’s a spark right now in Detroit and it’s great. Detroit is the one place in the world where you can come and do anything you want, and that is exciting.”

The City of Detroit is committed to supporting small businesses and has developed a small business directory that highlights local entrepreneurs. Find Kuzzo's in the directory along with over a hundred other businesses online or in print at Detroit Experience Factory, Sweet Potato Sensations and City Bird.
