Small Business Spotlight: Simply Casual

Simply Casual comes from a childhood dream of Rufus Bartell who, as a student at Mackenzie High School, had a teacher who made him write a list of things he wanted to do in life, owning a clothing store was one of his. Bartell says he has always had a passion for fashion.

The concept of Simply Casual is to provide an atmosphere where people can feel like they’re at home. Bartell says that he wants the store to cater to people who work hard and play hard, so he designed the store to be a comfortable place for everyone.

Simply Casual has been on the corner of Livernois on the Avenue of Fashion for about 13 years and Bartell loves the location.

“This neighborhood is a very strong neighborhood, there are a lot of travelers here who need something that can speak to their lifestyle and be able to reflect their place in the world.”

Bartell has a vision not only for his own store but for the entire Avenue of Fashion.

“The next level of being a business owner is being a business leader. My business philosophy is to be a business recruiter in addition to being a business owner. So I spend a large part of my time recruiting people to the Avenue of Fashion because we want to redevelop this entire strip.”

The City of Detroit is committed to supporting small businesses and has developed a small business directory that highlights local entrepreneurs. Find Simply Casual in the directory along with over a hundred other businesses online or in print at Detroit Experience Factory, Sweet Potato Sensations and City Bird.
